Custom Roll Labels Die Cut To Your Product

Custom roll labels are pressure sensitive labels supplied on a liner in roll form, which is what an applicator needs and what makes hand application at volume bearable. At its core the label is a liner, an adhesive and a face stock, and every decision worth making is about those three.

  • Thousands of dies in house. For a funky cut or very specific dimensions we are happy to order a new die for any project, but most sizes are already here.
  • Hand or machine applied. Pressure sensitive labels can be applied by hand or with a special machine applicator, and the roll is what feeds it.
  • Simple to very complex. Available in multiple constructions, from a standard die cut through peel back, double sided, multi panel and plow fold.

The Two Parts Of A Roll Label Buyers Skip

Everyone specifies the artwork and the size. The two that decide whether the roll actually runs are the construction and the material, and both are harder to change once a die exists.

One panel is not the only option

A standard die cut label is the most basic option and it covers most work: unlimited color printing with custom art and a custom die line to fit the product. Past that the constructions exist for specific problems. Peel back labels use a resealable adhesive so the end user can lift and reapply, which gives you a second printed surface without a second label. Double sided printing puts imagery on both faces, which is how a clear bottle with a clear product inside gets an effect you can see through the liquid. Plow fold gives three to seven panels for long warnings, dosing or another language.

Liner, adhesive, face stock

The face stock is what people look at and the adhesive is what decides whether the job succeeded. We carry a wide array of materials, from the basics like paper, white, clear and metallized film through to textured wine stocks, holographic films and hemp infused paper. Over the print, many customers add a UV varnish or a lamination to protect it, which is not optional on anything that gets handled, chilled or wiped down. Application surfaces run from glass jars and metal cans to cardboard, plastic wrapping and PET bottles, and each of those wants something different underneath.

What Decides A Roll Label Order

Three questions come up on nearly every roll label job, and answering them in this order saves a revision cycle.

One

Hand or applicator

A label applied by hand tolerates a lot. A label going onto an applicator does not, because the machine cares about how the roll is wound, which way the label faces as it comes off, and where the label sits relative to the liner edge. If you already have an applicator or a co-packer running one, that equipment sets the roll specification and the artwork has to live inside it. Tell us at quote stage rather than after the die is cut, because it is the one variable that cannot be fixed afterwards. Tell us at quote stage and we build the die and the roll around your applicator rather than around ours.

Two

What the label is stuck to

The same artwork behaves differently on glass, metal, cardboard, plastic film and PET. A rigid glass jar and a squeezable plastic bottle put entirely different stresses on an adhesive, and a label going onto corrugate is fighting a rough surface rather than a smooth one. Our team is happy to help find the solution that best works with your product, and it costs nothing to say what the container is before anything is specified. Our team of packaging experts does this for a living, and pressure sensitive labels are one of our top product offerings rather than a sideline.

Three

How much has to be on it

When the required copy will not fit, the answer is a construction rather than a smaller typeface. Peel back gives you the back of the label. Plow fold gives you three to seven panels. XTRA Text gives three panels with vivid color on all of them, which very few printers can run. An instant redeemable coupon turns the extra surface into a reason to buy again rather than more small print. We are one of the only printers able to run vivid color on all three panels of XTRA Text, and we have spent the last decade investing in the specialty finishing that makes those constructions worth having.

Dies

Usually no new tooling

We hold thousands of die sizes in house, so most jobs go straight to press. When a project needs a shape we do not have, we order the die.

A decade of investment

We have spent the last decade investing heavily in the specialty finishing side of pressure sensitive labels, which is where high build tactile varnish, variable imaging and embossed foils come from.

Color

The reorder matches

Digital printing holds color consistency run after run, and the price does not change based on how many colors are in the design.

Roll Label Questions, Answered

What is the difference between a roll label and a sheet label?

Roll labels come die cut on a continuous liner, which is what a machine applicator needs and what makes hand application at volume practical. Everything else about the label is the same: a liner, an adhesive and a face stock.

Do I need a new die for my size?

Usually not. We have thousands of die sizes in house. For a customer looking for a funky cut or very specific dimensions we are happy to order a new die for any project.

Can the labels be machine applied?

Yes. Pressure sensitive labels can be applied by hand or with a special machine applicator. If you or your co-packer already run an applicator, tell us at quote stage because that equipment sets how the roll has to be wound and oriented.

What surfaces do these work on?

A broad range of products, from glass jars to metal cans, cardboard boxes, plastic wrapping and PET bottles. Our team of packaging experts is happy to assist in finding the solution that best works with your product.

How do I fit more information on a small label?

Change the construction. Peel back uses a resealable adhesive so the label lifts and reapplies, giving you both sides. Plow fold offers three to seven panels for extensive warnings, instructions or multiple languages. XTRA Text is our trademarked three panel label, and we are one of the only printers able to run vivid color print on all three panels.

Can each label carry a different number or code?

Yes. Variable imaging, variable data, variable barcodes and variable QR codes are all available, so a lot number or a unique identifier can be applied from the initial print run for traceability or authentication.
