What Lay Flat Actually Covers

Buyers use the term for a family of flat constructions rather than one part number. All of them print on the same press, which means a retail size and its sample size can run off a single order.

Front panel, back panel, seals around the edge and nothing folded into the bottom. It lies flat in a shipper, stacks without trapping air and takes a hang hole cleanly because the top seal has no gusset running through it. This is the format we run most for refills, kit components, hardware and anything sold on a peg.

Three side seal sachets hold a single dose. Stick packs hold a powder meant to be poured into a bottle of water. Both are flat pouches with the dimensions pulled in, and both are the cheapest way to put your product in a stranger’s hand at a trade show or inside somebody else’s box.

Lay Flat Pouch Questions, Answered

What is the difference between a lay flat pouch and a stand up pouch?

A stand up pouch has a gusset folded into the bottom that opens out and lets the pouch stand on a shelf. A lay flat pouch has none, so it stays flat, ships thinner and usually costs less per piece. If the package has to face forward at retail, buy the gusset. If it hangs, mails or gets tucked into a kit, flat is almost always the better buy. Can a lay flat pouch reclose?

Yes. A press to close zipper runs across the top exactly the way it does on a standing pouch, and powder resistant and child resistant tracks are both available on flat constructions. The only thing you give up is the base.

Will a flat pouch hang on a retail peg?

Yes, with a euro slot or a round hole punched through the top seal. Tell us the hook style the retailer uses and we will place the hole so the pouch hangs square instead of twisting on the peg, which matters more than people expect on a wide pouch.

What is the smallest size you print?

Down to single dose sachets and stick packs. Those run on the same press as the full size flat pouches, so a sample sachet and the retail SKU it promotes can print together on one order and share the same artwork.

Does a flat pouch protect the product as well?

The barrier comes from the film structure, not the shape. A flat pouch built on the same high barrier laminate as a standing pouch gives you the same oxygen and moisture protection. What changes is how it presents and how much film goes into each piece.

Do you send samples?

Yes. Ask on this page and name the film and finish you want to see and feel. Samples before an order are basic stock without embellishment, and we quote them with the job. They ship from our plant in Farmingdale. Once your PO is placed, the press proof is free.
