The Two Things That Decide A Hang Tag

Buyers spend their time on the artwork and then decide the string in the last five minutes. It is the wrong order. The string and the panel count are what make a hang tag work on the product, and both are easier to get right before the die is cut than after.

Specified last, noticed first

Natural fiber string reads as honest and unfussy. Satin ribbon reads premium. Elastic holds a tag on a shape that has no neck to tie to. Bakery twine belongs on food, mercerized cotton on apparel, and metallic lame or pearlray on a bottle that already carries foil. Length matters as much as material, and it is the one measurement nobody has on hand. Send us the product and we will work it out before anything runs.

One side, two sides, or a booklet

Single side printing keeps the cost down when the tag is doing branding alone. Double side printing gives you a back to work with, and that back is where most brands put the thing that actually sells: usage instructions, sourcing, a care symbol set, or a coupon toward the next purchase. When two sides run out, a folding booklet tag opens to more panels without making the tag any bigger on the shelf.

Where A Hang Tag Does The Most Work

A hang tag is the only part of a package a shopper will pick up and turn over before they decide. That is worth understanding before you design one, because the categories below each ask something different of the tag.

Apparel

Clothing hang tags

Clothing hang tags carry the most freight of any tag format. Size, fiber content, care symbols, country of origin and price all have to sit on a piece of board a few inches across, and the brand story has to survive whatever is left. Apparel is also the category where the string is doing visible work, since the tag hangs in the open against the garment rather than sitting flat against a box. Mercerized cotton and natural fiber string are the usual answers, and elastic solves the sleeve or the shoe that has nothing to tie through. We stock a dozen string types and string every tag to the length you specify before it ships, so the part that gets decided last is the part we have already solved.

Bottlenecks

Spirits and specialty food

Bottleneck hang tags are the standard way to put a story on a bottle without crowding the label. Distillers use them for mash bills, barrel numbers and age statements. Specialty food producers use them for a recipe or a sourcing note on a bottle of oil or syrup. Because the tag sits over the closure, the die shape and the string length have to clear the neck and the capsule, which is why we size those from a physical sample rather than a drawing. Mail us the bottle and our team works out the die shape and the stringing length before anything runs.

Retail

Gift, promo and variety packs

Outside apparel and bottles, the tag is usually doing a job the package cannot. A coupon toward the next purchase printed on the back turns a one-time buyer into a repeat one. A variety pack gets a tag explaining what is inside it. Seasonal and limited runs get a tag rather than a new package because the tag is the cheapest thing on the product to change. Digital printing is what keeps that true here, because a short seasonal run costs the same per tag as the flagship and the price does not move when the artwork has twelve colors instead of four.

Why Brands Bring Hang Tag Printing To Us

One roof

Art through ship

Prepress, printing, die cutting, stringing and bagging all happen at 24 Baiting Place Road. When a die needs a second look, the operator who cut it is down the hall from the person who proofed the file. Nothing gets brokered out and nothing waits on another shop.

Color

The second run matches the first

Digital printing lets us hold color consistency run after run. Line variations and multiple color plates are a thing of the past, which means your designer can build something intricate without the price moving because of how many colors are in it.

Sizing

We work out the string length

Nobody knows their stringing length off the top of their head. Mail us a sample of the product and we will tell you what it needs, then cut and string to that number for every run afterward.

Range

Same vendor as the label

If the product inside already carries one of our labels, running the hang tag here keeps the color, the foil and the finish consistent across both. Brand continuity is easiest to guarantee when one facility makes the whole set.

Hang Tag Questions, Answered

What is a hang tag actually for?

It buys you space your product label does not have. Brands use it for additional imagery, for information that will not fit on the front of the package, and often just as branding that gives the product an air of elegance and a more premium feel. Some manufacturers print a coupon toward the next purchase on one side, which is a straightforward incentive for repeat buyers.

Can you print both sides?

Yes. Single side and double side printing are both standard. If two faces still is not enough, a folding booklet tag opens to more panels while keeping the same footprint on the shelf.

What string options do you offer?

Natural fiber string, satin ribbon, elastic string, bakery twine, cords, mercerized cotton string, metallic lame and pearlray, plus jute and colored cotton. We keep a broad array so the string can match the product rather than fight it.

Do the tags arrive already strung?

Yes. Hang tags are bagged and delivered in bulk, precut and strung to your exact specifications so they are ready to apply when they reach you. If you are not sure what stringing length you need, send us a product for sizing and we will determine it.

Can a hang tag be cut into a custom shape?

Yes. Custom die cuts are one of the standard options, and tags can be specialty die cut to accentuate the rest of the packaging design. We hold thousands of dies in house, and for a shape or dimension we do not already have we will order a new die for the project.

Can hang tags be foil stamped or embossed?

Both. Foil stamping is available on hang tags in hundreds of foil colors including patterned, glitter, matte and gloss. Embossing and debossing are available as well, and so is Kaleidoscope variable image if you want each tag in the run to look distinct. Ask for a foil book to see the range.
