The Two Things That Make Food Harder

Food packaging can present more challenges than some other markets. Two of them account for most of the trouble, and neither is a design problem.

Wet, cold, and expected to hold

Meat labels are the hardest case in the category. The label goes onto a wet surface, sometimes a chilled one, and then has to stay there through a freezer and a retail case without lifting at a corner. Our many years of experience have shown us there is a solution for whichever obstacle you are facing, and we provide them for dozens of meat packers. The answer is almost always in the adhesive and the face stock rather than in anything visible, which is why the specification conversation has to happen before the artwork is signed off.

The regulations get the space first

The list of requirements for food packaging can be quite lengthy, from FDA regulated font sizes to the information required on the label and the claims a company can and cannot make. On top of that you will want to call out any special certifications bestowed upon your product, including Non-GMO, Kosher or Gluten-Free Certified. All of that is mandatory or near mandatory real estate, and it is fixed before the brand gets any. Design the label around what has to be there rather than fitting the requirements in afterwards.

Where Food Packaging Gets Difficult

Specialty food covers basic commodities and limited release items in the same breath. What the package has to survive changes completely between them.

Cold chain

Meat labels and frozen goods

A label applied to a wet tray at the packing line and then taken to freezer temperature is being asked to do two contradictory things: grab immediately on a damp surface, then stay grabbed while the substrate contracts in the cold. This is a well understood problem with a material answer, and it is the single most common reason a food label fails in the field. It is also the reason meat packers tend to consolidate their label buying, because once the specification is right there is no reason to re-solve it per SKU. We provide solutions for dozens of meat packers already, and our years in the category mean there is an answer for whichever obstacle you are facing.

High end

Luxurious options for specialty food

Specially crafted, niche products need unique packaging to shine on the shelf. Specialty laminations add a dimension with an indulgent feel, and the touch and feel of a lamination gives consumers a tangible experience they will not soon forget. Some of the sensory perceptions available through these unusual laminations include velvet soft touch, gritty sandpaper, leather and linen. We have one of the largest offerings in the industry and are expanding on a frequent basis. Ask for a sample before you commit, because the touch and feel is the entire argument for these and it does not photograph.

Snacks

Custom snack packaging and pouches

Soft touch lamination on pouches is currently trending as the most popular way to package everything from snacks to nuts to frozen food items. Spot UV on a pouch makes branding or call outs pop. For individually wrapped cookies or bars, printed roll stock is the format, since it arrives as a flat printed roll and gets formed, filled and sealed on your own line. Soft touch lamination and spot UV are both available on pouches here, so a snack line can get the shelf presence of a premium label on a flexible package.

Food Label Questions, Answered

Will a label stick to a wet meat tray and then survive a freezer?

That is exactly the problem we solve most often in this category. Labeling meat presents a specific set of challenges, from being applied to a wet surface to needing to stick in a freezer, and our years of experience mean there is a solution for whichever obstacle you are facing.

Are you food safety certified?

K. Sidrane is currently in the process of obtaining our SQF certification and will be fully certified in 2026.

How do I fit nutritional information and a recipe on one label?

A full color multi panel label. It is ideal for showcasing recipes or extra nutritional information, and it is a one of a kind option in this category. Ask for a sample and a team member will connect with you.

What laminations are available for premium food packaging?

Velvet soft touch, gritty sandpaper, leather and linen are among the unusual laminations we carry, and we have one of the largest offerings in the industry with more added frequently. Soft touch is also available on pouches, which is currently the most popular way to package snacks, nuts and frozen items.

Can I print several SKUs at once?

Yes. Many meat packers already use our digital press to print multiple SKUs in a combination run for a total cost saving, and it works the same way for any brand with a range of products at the same label size.

What packaging works for individually wrapped bars or cookies?

Printed roll stock. It arrives as a flat printed roll and gets formed, filled and sealed at your own facility, which is the standard approach for single serve and sample sized items.
